As such, students wishing to study in Urdu language can now opt for it as their first language.
It was a long pending demand of the students of Telangana, the newly created state in southern India.
The state government issued a formal order in this regard soon after Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao signed the file on Tuesday night.
"So far Urdu was the second official language in the state and the students could have opted for it as the second language. However now it will be possible for the students to opt for Urdu as first language, both in schools and higher education," it said.
An official press release said that the government had received several representations from the linguistic minority community to make Urdu a first language.
Fulfilling the demand the Chief Minister took the decision and orders were issued.
Urdu is mostly spoken by Muslims who constitute about 13 per cent of the state population.
The Chief Minister also announced that a separate school and a hostel for minorities will be set up in each of the ten districts of Telangana.
Similarly he said that the pre matric scholarships will be issued to all the eligible students of minorities. The decision was expected to benefit at least 75,000 minority students.
