Telangana govt Excise Department to study introduction sale of cheapest of cheap liquor

The Telangana government asked the Excise Department to study introduction of government arrack or sale of cheapest of cheap liquor as a means to satiate the desire for consumption of alcohol by poor people.

Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao told a post-Cabinet meeting press conference that the demand for introduction of government arrack went up from women as 30 to 50 of them were losing their husbands in each village due to consumption of illicitly distilled liquor. In these circumstances, the Cabinet had asked excise officials to study if the department was in a position to enforce regulated sale of arrack by the government or go for cheapest of cheap liquor brands. Mr. Rao said the Cabinet cleared insurance cover worth Rs. 5 lakh to toddy tappers and fishermen who are enrolled in registered societies. The supply of food to students as part of mid-day meals and in social welfare hostels will no longer be limited by measure.
